How To Install Minecraft Server on Ubuntu

  • get java for your machine (keep it easy: install a 64-bit java if you have a 64-bit Ubuntu ok...)
  • Download server software¬†minecraft_server.1.7.10.jar (source)
  • Place the .jar in a folder of your liking
  • Create a symbolic link to it like this:
    • ln -s ./minecraft_server.1.7.10.jar ./mc.jar
  • Then create a minecraft.sh-file to start it using this command:
    • java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar mc.jar nogui
    • File might look like:

      java -Xms1G -Xmx1G -jar minecraft_server.jar nogui

  • Now run the server (minecraft.sh)
  • Or run it as a service.

If you want 'creative' world instead of 'survival', change gamemode from value 0 to 1 in file server.properties (this file is automatically created the first time you start the server)
