How to set up serial communications to a USB device in Ubuntu

  • Find USB device you want to communicate to

lsusb

Write down vendor and product

  • Load usb-serial module, linked to the required USB device (source)

cd /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/usb/serial/
sudo insmod usbserial.ko vendor=0x0bc7 product=0x0001

sudo mknod /dev/usb/ttyUSB0 c 188 0
:
sudo mknod /dev/usb/ttyUSB15 c 188 15

You should now be able to plug in a serial device into the adapter, and use the /dev/usb/ttyUSB0 just as if it were a normal serial port.
